Simply and powerfully, this painting represents a double illusion: not only does the subject magically levitate but the knotty, dovetailed wood begs to be touched, to see If It's Real. The french clown is an autobiographical symbol, used again in the later painting "The Proposal". The sea biscuit also pushes the boundaries of illusion in this highly textured and dramatically classical composition.
